Auditions for “A Funny Thing…”

The Acting Ensemble will be holding auditions for their production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Gynecologic Oncology Unit at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City by Halley Feiffer. Auditions will be Tuesday, November 30th and Wednesday, December 1st, both evenings at 7 pm, and will be held at The Ensemble on the Avenue, 602 East Mishawaka Ave, Mishawaka, IN 46545. Auditions will be cold readings from the script, nothing needs to be prepared in advance. All parts are open; no roles have been pre-cast. The director welcomes all performers.
Auditioners and staff are expected to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and will need to wear a mask for the auditions.  The cast will also need to have a negative Covid test within 48 hours of the performance. With ever-changing Covid protocols, these guidelines may be subject to change. Welcome to The Theatre of Covid Times. 😀
Director Andi Creasbaum and Stage Manager Anastasia Field are looking for 3 women and 1 man for the following cast:
Karla: Early 30’s-ish female actor. A stand-up comedian with a dirty mouth and a penchant for dark humor which she uses to distract herself from her mother’s illness.
Don: Late 40’s-ish male actor. An unassuming “everyman” who employs rage to mask the gaping wounds of a failed marriage and ill mother.
Marcie: Late 50’s-ish female actor. Karla’s mother who is recovering from a hysterectomy to treat endometrial cancer. Very dry wit, to the point of abuse, with moments of tender vulnerability.
Geena: Late 60’s-ish female actor. Don’s mother who has been battling ovarian cancer for 7 years. Has not cared about her appearance in about 40 years.
Summary from Dramatists Play Service:
A foul mouthed twenty-something comedian and a middle-aged man embroiled in a nasty divorce are brought together unexpectedly when their cancer-stricken mothers become roommates in the hospital. Together, this unlikely duo must negotiate some of life’s biggest challenges, while making some of the world’s most inappropriate jokes. Can these two very lost people learn to laugh through their pain and lean on each other, when all they really want to do is run away?
This is an adult show that includes a lot of language. sex, and other adult content. It was originally produced in 2016.
The roles of Marcie and Geena are small roles, with Geena only having 5 or so lines. Actors for those roles will need to be comfortable being on stage, lying in a bed, for the bulk of the show.
The roles of Karla and Don have a lot of intimacy together that will be TIGHTLY choreographed. This includes Karla “pantsing” Don to reveal his boxers, a lot of kissing, and a (simulated) sex act that takes place in a bathroom, but will be visible on stage. Please feel free to email the director with any questions about these roles at before auditioning.
In addition to the intimacy, the role of Karla also includes her working on a rape joke for her stand-up set. It is a sizable bit of dialogue. Again, please email the director at with any questions about this.
The performances will be March 11-13 and March 18-20. Once cast, there will be one read through scheduled, then the actors will be tasked with gaining a good working knowledge of the script before we begin rehearsals in mid-January. Rehearsals will be 3-4 nights a week through Tech Week (March 7th – 10th). Rehearsals may be held on weekend days, if needed, but the director will try to stick to weeknights only. They will be from 7-9:30pm, with tech week possibly going slightly later.
